A striking example of 19th-century French apothecary ware, this beautifully preserved porcelain jar is labelled “PIL. CICUTÆ,” indicating it once stored pills containing hemlock extract – a powerful and historic medicinal herb.
This jar combines classical form with rich hand-painted detail, featuring ornate gilded scrolling around the label, traditional serif lettering, and fine gold banding to the lid and body.
Crafted in white glazed porcelain with a domed lid, the jar would have originally graced the shelves of a French pharmacy or chemist’s dispensary.
The gilding and decoration are meticulously applied by hand, giving it a unique, artisanal charm. A rare and visually arresting piece for collectors of medical history, antique décor enthusiasts, or as a dramatic focal point in a cabinet of curiosities.
