An exceptional example of 19th-century Victorian taxidermy, this large and dramatic cased diorama features a full mount of a red fox alongside a pheasant and a stoat, arranged within a glazed wooden case in the naturalistic style so favoured during the era.
This elaborate tableau captures a moment of motion and tension: the fox, alert and poised, dominates the scene as it steps over its feathered prey, a pheasant, while a stoat emerges below through mossy underbrush.
The composition is framed by dried bracken and grasses, all set before a delicately hand-painted sky backdrop—hallmarks of authentic Victorian taxidermy craft.
The display case is original, complete with aged patina and its original glass front, presenting a striking piece of natural history as it would have appeared in a Victorian parlour, study, or gentleman’s cabinet of curiosities.
