A substantial Victorian apothecary bottle complete with its original ground glass stopper and retaining its historic contents.

The bottle bears a period pharmaceutical label reading “P: Zingib.”—an abbreviation for Pulvis Zingiberis, the Latin name for powdered ginger, a common ingredient in Victorian medicine and pharmacy.

Used by chemists and dispensaries throughout the 19th century, bottles of this type were employed to store medicinal powders, herbal preparations and pharmaceutical compounds.

The surviving contents, stopper and label create a particularly evocative example, offering a direct glimpse into the working environment of a Victorian pharmacy.

The tall cylindrical form, broad shoulder and substantial stopper are typical of professional apothecary glassware of the period.
