A substantial early 20th century oak letter rack bearing the original brass maker’s plaque for Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd of Govan, Glasgow.

Constructed in solid oak with six individual compartments arranged over two tiers, each retaining textured glass fronts and dividers.

Fairfield Shipbuilding was one of Scotland’s most important shipbuilders, responsible for constructing numerous merchant vessels, naval ships and ocean-going liners from its famous Govan yard on the River Clyde.

Items bearing the company’s original maker’s plaques are highly sought after by collectors of maritime memorabilia and industrial history.

Practical and decorative in equal measure, this handsome piece would have originally been used for sorting correspondence, paperwork or internal communications within an office, workshop or shipyard environment.

Today it makes an excellent display piece for a study, office, library or maritime collection.
