A rare and atmospheric 19th-century military hat box, manufactured by Hawkes & Co of 14 Piccadilly, London—renowned outfitters to the British Army and Royal Household. This conical tin hat box bears the name of Capt. W. Swinhoe-Phelan of the Sherwood Foresters, proudly painted across the domed lid in period script.

The original retailer’s brass shield plaque is mounted to the front and clearly marked Hawkes & Co, 14 Piccadilly, London, lending superb provenance and authenticity. The tin surface retains its original painted finish, now gracefully weathered with a mottled, rusted patina that tells its own story of military service and age.

Inside, the hat box reveals a beautifully worn coppery interior. Its domed shape was designed to protect tall or plumed military dress hats, and it retains its hanging loop to the top for vertical storage or transport.

A striking collectible for militaria enthusiasts, costume departments, or anyone captivated by 19th-century British military history.
