Description

Width: 53cm

Depth: 29cm

Height: 20cm

A finely made 19th century gentleman’s travel correspondence writing slope, crafted in richly figured rosewood and designed for portability and practical use while travelling.

The exterior presents a restrained, rectangular form with a hinged lid and central escutcheon, typical of mid-to-late Victorian personal writing furniture.

Opening to reveal a fitted interior, the slope features a hinged writing surface lined in a contrasting fabric, beneath which are compartments intended for correspondence, papers, and writing accessories.

The interior construction shows traditional joinery and period craftsmanship, with the proportions and layout reflecting the importance of letter writing and record-keeping in the 19th century.

The use of rosewood, valued for both its durability and decorative grain, places this firmly within the gentleman’s travelling accessories of the era, intended to accompany extended journeys or residence away from home.

Care instructions
This writing slope should be kept in a stable, dry environment away from direct sunlight or sources of heat, which may cause the wood to fade or dry. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid the use of silicone-based polishes or abrasive cleaners. If required, occasional treatment with a specialist wood wax suitable for antique furniture may be used sparingly. The interior lining should be kept dry and free from pressure to preserve its original appearance.
