A rare and distinguished set of 19th-century Royal Navy officer’s dress epaulettes presented in their original fitted tin case by Matthews & Co. Naval Outfitters, Portsea, Portsmouth.

This impressive pair features richly braided gold bullion fringe with a domed naval button to each shoulder strap and beautifully preserved velvet and leather backing.

Housed in a purpose-made black-painted tin box with scarlet red velvet lining and original securing clasps, this set represents an important survival from Britain’s naval heritage.

Matthews & Co. were prominent outfitters to the Royal Navy, serving high-ranking officers from one of the UK’s key naval ports.

The gilt label to the inner lid confirms their standing and authenticity as suppliers to the British military.
