Description

Height: 18cm

Width: 15.5cm

A wonderfully atmospheric 20th century theatrical mask constructed from a combination of papier-mâché and plaster, retaining its original hand-painted finish and striking characterful expression.

The mask depicts an aged face with deeply shadowed eye sockets, pronounced brow, subtle facial modelling and a naturally worn surface that has developed considerable character over time.

The muted flesh tones, hand-painted detailing and visible signs of use contribute to its evocative and slightly haunting appearance.

Examples such as this were commonly produced for amateur dramatics, theatre productions, processions, carnivals, folk performances and traditional pageants throughout the twentieth century.

Their handcrafted construction means no two examples are ever quite identical, each possessing its own individual personality and charm.

The interior retains its original fastening arrangement and reveals the traditional layered construction methods used in period theatrical mask making.
