Description
A rare and important early 19th-century theological and historical volume titled A History of the Jesuits; to Which is Prefixed a Reply to Mr. Dallas’s Defence of that Order, printed in 1816 by Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, Paternoster Row, London. This is Volume II of the two-volume set and provides an in-depth critique of the Jesuit order from a British Protestant perspective.
The book is bound in handsome full calf leather with intricate gilt tooling along the spine and raised bands. The spine title is embossed in gold, though the black volume label has partially worn. Internally, the pages retain excellent clarity, with minor age-related foxing and tight binding throughout.
This controversial yet academically significant publication is a window into early 19th-century religious discourse, specifically debates around the role, influence, and public perception of the Jesuit order within British and European society.
