Description

Height: 26cm

Width: 16cm

An authentic Dayak ceremonial mask featuring natural gorilla hair, originating from the indigenous Dayak peoples of Borneo.

Constructed from carved organic material and retaining its original dark hair covering, the mask displays a striking and primitive appearance associated with traditional tribal ceremonial and ritual use.

The reverse reveals the hand-worked construction, while the front presents a dramatic visage created through the natural hair and shaped facial features.

Masks of this type were traditionally produced for ceremonial performances, cultural celebrations and spiritual rituals amongst various Dayak communities.

Pieces of this nature have long been sought after by collectors of ethnographic art, tribal artefacts, natural history and cabinets of curiosities.

The combination of organic materials, age, and cultural significance makes each example unique.

An evocative and highly decorative ethnographic display piece that would sit comfortably amongst collections of tribal art, natural history, taxidermy and unusual antiques.
