An original Boer War period military prismatic compass by the renowned instrument makers H. Hughes & Son of London, complete with its original leather carrying case and strap.
The compass is marked to the reverse H. Hughes & Son Ltd, 59 Fenchurch Street, London E.C., together with its serial number, identifying it as a quality British-made navigational instrument from the late Victorian era.
H. Hughes & Son were amongst Britain’s most respected manufacturers of nautical and military navigational equipment, supplying instruments for military, maritime and surveying use.
This example features a traditional brass and steel construction with a hinged sighting lid, prism viewing window and graduated compass card.
The compass remains housed within its original brown leather field case, complete with carrying strap, creating a highly evocative survival from the age of Empire and military exploration.
Compasses of this type saw extensive service during the Boer War and the wider late Victorian military period, where accurate navigation was essential for reconnaissance, surveying and field operations.
