Description
Width: 1.5cm
A British Iron Age silver unit attributed to the Iceni tribe, dating from approximately 10–43 AD.
This type is commonly referred to as a “double reverse” issue, characterised by its abstracted design language and the prominent horse motif.
The coin displays a stylised horse facing right, a recurring and symbolic image within Iceni coinage, often associated with power, status, and movement.
The surrounding elements are rendered in a highly abstract, almost geometric manner, reflecting the distinctive
Celtic artistic tradition of the period. The opposing side continues this abstract theme, with disjointed linear and pellet forms rather than a classical portrait, typical of late pre-Roman British issues.
Struck by hand on an irregular flan, this piece embodies the transitional phase of native British coinage shortly before the Roman conquest.
Coins of the Iceni are particularly sought after, not least due to their association with Queen Boudica and the tribe’s resistance to Roman rule.
