A superb mid nineteenth-century French drumhead mantel clock, richly decorated in the Boulle taste and retaining its original key and pendulum.
The circular drum-shaped case is mounted upon an elegant shaped plinth and is adorned with intricate gilt brass and brass-inlaid decoration against a deep red ground, creating the luxurious appearance for which Boulle-inspired furnishings became renowned during the Napoleon III period.
The clock features a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, protected by a glazed bezel door, while the rear movement access door opens to reveal the original mechanism.
The decorative case is further enhanced with finely cast gilt mounts, scrolling ornament and elegant feet, all contributing to its impressive visual presence.
French Boulle clocks of this period were designed not only as timekeepers but also as statement pieces, intended to occupy pride of place on mantels, consoles and drawing room furnishings.
Their combination of decorative craftsmanship and precision clockmaking continues to make them highly sought after by collectors today.
This example is accompanied by its winding key and pendulum and is reported to keep good time, making it both a functional and highly decorative antique.
