The exterior is adorned with beautifully detailed naturalistic fern fronds surrounding an oval transfer depicting the historic ruins of Jedburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders.

Produced during the Victorian period, Mauchline ware became renowned for its finely crafted wooden souvenir items decorated with transfer-printed scenes of famous landmarks, beauty spots and historic buildings.

This example combines the popular fernware decoration with an image of one of Scotland’s most iconic abbeys, making it particularly appealing to collectors of Scottish antiques and Mauchline ware.

The box retains its original key escutcheon and displays attractive decorative border work to the interior rim. Pieces featuring Jedburgh Abbey are increasingly difficult to find, especially in box form.
