Description
A rare British military horse sand mask dating to the Second World War, constructed from moulded leather with reinforced stitching and adjustable leather strap fittings.
Designed to fit over a horse’s muzzle and eyes, the mask features circular eye apertures and ventilation perforations, allowing visibility while protecting against wind-blown sand, dust, and debris.
The robust leatherwork and utilitarian design reflect wartime military equipment produced for active service environments rather than ceremonial use.
Such masks were issued for horses deployed in desert and arid theatres, where cavalry and transport animals remained vital to military logistics.
They form part of a lesser-seen category of wartime equipment associated with animal service in conflict, illustrating the continued reliance on horses by the British Army during the 1939–1945 period.
Surviving examples are scarce and are typically found in specialist militaria or military veterinary collections.
Care instructions
Display in a stable, dry indoor environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Dust lightly with a soft brush. Avoid flexing the leather or prolonged handling to maintain its form and surface integrity.
