A striking vintage Hannya mask, hand-carved from wood and finished in bold polychrome decoration.
The mask depicts the iconic Japanese theatrical figure, characterised by its fierce expression, protruding horns, and exaggerated features symbolising jealousy, rage, and transformation.
The surface is painted in contrasting tones, with metallic accents to the horns and teeth enhancing the dramatic expression.
Fine carved details to the brow, cheeks, and mouth give depth and movement to the piece, while the hollowed eyes and open mouth add to its theatrical presence.
Hannya masks originate from traditional Japanese Noh theatre, where they represent a woman consumed by emotion, transformed into a demon.
Today, they are widely collected as decorative art objects and cultural pieces, appreciated for both their symbolism and craftsmanship.
