A rare and highly collectible Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase designed by Frank Butler and produced to commemorate the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888.
Executed in Doulton’s celebrated art pottery tradition, the vase features richly modelled scrolling foliate decoration in deep cobalt blue, sage green and buff tones, all highlighted by the exceptional quality of the salt-glazed stoneware body.
The elegant bottle form is characteristic of late Victorian art pottery and showcases the craftsmanship for which Doulton Lambeth became internationally renowned.
To the front is an incised commemorative inscription reading:
“Int. Exhibition, Glasgow, July 1888”
linking the piece directly to one of the most important international exhibitions of the Victorian era.
Frank Butler was one of Doulton’s most respected designers, producing some of the firm’s finest art pottery during the late nineteenth century.
Exhibition pieces such as this are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples bearing commemorative inscriptions relating to major historic events.
