Description

Height: 7.5cm

Width: 5.5cm

A Victorian porcelain spill vase dating from circa 1861–1867, attributed to Hill Pottery Co.

The cylindrical vase is decorated in the Greek Revival taste with classical black and white figures against a rich terracotta-red ground.

One side depicts a seated classical male figure accompanied by an eagle, while the reverse features a seated female figure.

Finished with gilt detailing around the rim and a repeating classical border around the base.

The underside carries period factory marks.

A particularly decorative example of mid-19th-century Victorian pottery influenced by ancient Greek and Etruscan designs.

There is age-related wear to the decoration and gilding, as expected for a piece of this age and as shown in the photographs.
