A decorative 19th century Japanese lacquered tea caddy, of faceted rectangular form with a removable cylindrical outer cover and inner neck.
Finished in a rich dark red and black mottled lacquer, the caddy is decorated throughout with delicate gilt floral and foliate designs, with further fine gilt detailing around the shoulders and borders.
The angular form gives the piece a particularly attractive architectural appearance.
The removable cover reveals the black lacquered opening beneath.
A lovely surviving example of 19th century Japanese decorative ware, originally intended for the storage of tea.
There is age-related wear throughout, including rubbing and losses to the lacquer and gilt decoration, small knocks and areas of surface wear, all adding to its antique character and clearly shown in the photographs.
