An authentic 19th century Japanese rice basket, hand woven from natural plant fibres with a traditional bentwood carrying handle.

These utilitarian baskets were used throughout rural Japan for harvesting, transporting and storing rice and other agricultural produce, and were made using techniques passed down through generations of basket makers.

The basket displays a beautifully aged surface with a warm natural colour developed through decades of use.

The finely woven body is complemented by a substantial double bentwood handle secured with carved wooden blocks, creating both strength and flexibility.

The elegant tapered form is characteristic of traditional Japanese agricultural baskets, where practicality and craftsmanship were equally valued.

Today these baskets are highly sought after for rustic, farmhouse, wabi-sabi and Japandi interiors.

Their sculptural form makes them ideal as decorative storage, log baskets, textile holders or simply as standalone examples of traditional Japanese folk art.
