A fascinating 19th century leather sporting case bearing the remains of its original maker’s label for the renowned London gunmaker Charles Lancaster.

Constructed from thick leather over a rigid frame, the case retains its original carrying handle, leather straps, corner reinforcements and fitted interior.

The inside is lined in green baize and still contains a series of leather retaining loops designed to secure the contents during travel.

The surviving paper trade label identifies the maker as Charles Lancaster, Gun Manufacturer, New Bond Street, London, one of the most respected names in Victorian sporting arms.

Lancaster was celebrated throughout the 19th century for producing high-quality sporting guns and rifles, supplying wealthy sportsmen, military officers and gentlemen travellers.

Cases of this type were produced for transporting firearms and their accessories during travel, shooting expeditions and country sporting pursuits.

Today they are highly sought after as decorative sporting antiques and collectors’ pieces, appreciated for their craftsmanship, patina and historical association with one of Britain’s foremost gunmakers.
