Description
A substantial antique forged iron animal trap of traditional round-jaw form, complete with its original chain, trigger plate and fixing bar.
Constructed from heavy iron throughout, this example features a sprung circular jaw mechanism mounted to a long base bar, retaining its original chain attachment and ground anchor.
Such traps were historically used throughout Britain, Europe and North America for the capture of wolves, foxes and other predators, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries when livestock protection was a necessity in rural communities.
The trap displays a wonderful untouched surface with deep iron patination developed over many decades, giving it tremendous decorative appeal for collectors of rural antiques, country house interiors, hunting memorabilia and historical curiosities.
Today these pieces are highly sought after as decorative conversation pieces and examples of early utilitarian blacksmithing.
