Description
Width: 4.7cm
A beautiful antique Victorian bog oak brooch featuring a romantic crescent moon surrounded by scrolling foliage and floral decoration, including traditional forget-me-not motifs.
The deeply carved bog oak has a rich near-black finish, with raised flowers decorating the crescent and a larger flower positioned within its centre.
The crescent is framed by elaborate carved scrollwork, creating a wonderfully Gothic appearance.
Bog oak jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period and was strongly associated with Ireland, where ancient preserved oak was carved into jewellery and souvenirs.
Forget-me-nots were also a popular Victorian sentimental motif, symbolising remembrance and enduring affection.
