Description
blade is: 52cm
An original French Model 1874 Gras sword bayonet, issued for use with the Gras rifle, a key service rifle of the French Army in the late 19th century.
This example features the characteristic long, slender T-section blade designed for both thrusting and cutting, paired with a robust steel crossguard incorporating the distinctive forward-curving quillon.
The grip is constructed with wooden scales secured by rivets, terminating in a shaped pommel with locking mechanism for attachment to the rifle. The bayonet is accompanied by its original steel scabbard, completing the set.
Adopted following the conversion of the earlier Chassepot system, the Model 1874 bayonet represents a transitional period in European military arms, bridging older black powder weaponry with more modern developments.
Pieces such as this were widely used and later repurposed or stored, making surviving complete examples increasingly desirable to collectors.
Care instructions:
Lightly oil the blade with a suitable conservation oil to prevent further oxidation. Store in a dry environment and avoid prolonged contact between blade and scabbard to reduce moisture retention.
