Description
width: 30.5cm
An unusual Gothic-inspired decorative clock featuring real preserved insect specimens displayed against an elaborate antique-style clock face.
The striking dial features distressed gold Roman numerals, decorative mechanical cogs and black clock hands, surrounded by a deep, dark wood-effect circular frame.
Mounted within the clock face is an impressive death’s-head hawkmoth (Acherontia species), instantly recognisable by the skull-like marking on its thorax and distinctive yellow and black patterned body.
Above it sits a delicate electric-blue damselfly, providing a beautiful contrast against the aged gold background.
The death’s-head hawkmoth has long been associated with mortality, superstition and Gothic symbolism, making this an especially atmospheric piece for collectors of natural history and the macabre.
Combining Victorian-inspired design, steampunk aesthetics and entomological curiosities, this distinctive piece would make a wonderful addition to a cabinet of curiosities, Gothic study, dark academia interior or eclectic gallery wall.
