Description

Width: 9cm

Depth: 8cm

An attractive Japanese Meiji period copper box of rectangular form, raised on four feet and decorated with a finely executed mixed metal inlay depicting flowering iris amongst slender reeds.

The warm copper body is enhanced by contrasting silver-toned and darker metal inlays, a decorative technique that became highly sought after during the Meiji era (1868–1912) when Japanese metalworkers gained international recognition for their craftsmanship.

The understated design reflects the Japanese appreciation for nature and seasonal motifs, with the iris traditionally symbolising protection, courage and renewal.

The interior retains its original metal lining, while the exterior displays a rich aged patina that complements the refined decorative work.

Pieces of this type were often produced as trinket boxes, document boxes or presentation cases and remain highly collectible examples of Meiji decorative arts.

A handsome display piece that would sit equally well within a collection of Japanese antiques, mixed metal work or oriental decorative objects.
