A substantial Scottish stoneware storage jar manufactured by J.G.

Thomson & Co Ltd of Leith, Edinburgh. Finished in the classic two-tone salt-glazed style, the jar features a buff glazed shoulder above a cream stoneware body and is prominently marked “J.G. Thomson & Co Ltd, Vaults, Leith, 9108” to the front.

Stoneware jars of this type were widely used throughout the late Victorian and early twentieth century periods for the storage and transportation of foodstuffs, preserves, pickles, brewing ingredients and household provisions.

Their robust construction and practical form made them an essential feature of both domestic and commercial settings.

This example is additionally impressed with the maker’s mark “A.W. Buchan & Co, Portobello, Scotland”, one of Scotland’s most respected stoneware manufacturers.

Its generous proportions, authentic advertising inscription and attractive utilitarian appearance make it a desirable decorative piece for farmhouse, country kitchen and industrial-inspired interiors.
