A fantastic oversized vintage French cicada brooch, intricately carved with a wonderfully detailed insect form.

The cicada features long folded wings, a segmented body and pierced detailing around the upper section, all worked in a rich reddish-brown material with attractive natural-looking tonal variation.

Cicadas are an enduring motif in French decorative arts, particularly associated with Provence and the South of France, where they traditionally symbolise summer, renewal and good fortune.

This is an especially large statement example, as shown in the hand-held photograph, and makes an unusual piece of vintage insect jewellery.
