A striking pair of early 20th century Yoruba Ibeji twin figures from Nigeria, cast in bronze and displaying strong traditional stylised features.

The male and female figures are individually modelled standing on integral circular bases, with elongated bodies, prominent facial features and distinctive detailed coiffures.

Both have developed a dark, aged surface patina with areas of verdigris and wear consistent with age.

Ibeji figures are associated with the Yoruba tradition surrounding twins, who hold particular cultural significance within Yoruba society.

Traditionally, Ibeji figures were created in connection with deceased twins and cared for within the family.

An interesting pair of early African ethnographic figures with considerable decorative and collecting appeal.

There is age-related surface wear, oxidation, patination and casting irregularities throughout, as photographed.
