Description
A highly collectible vintage “Thunderbird 5” battery operated toy produced by A.J.R Toys (Hong Kong), dating to the 1960s, inspired by the iconic Thunderbirds created by Gerry Anderson.
This piece represents the space station Thunderbird 5, recognisable by its saucer-shaped form, central dome, and attached module.
The toy features coloured plastic lenses designed to illuminate, along with a “mystery action” mechanism typical of mid-century battery-operated toys. Inside the dome sits a small figure representing the station’s operator, echoing the character John Tracy.
Manufactured during the golden age of Japanese and Hong Kong tin/plastic toys, A.J.R produced affordable licensed and unlicensed interpretations of popular TV and sci-fi themes.
The surviving original box—marked “Battery Operated with Mystery Action and Flashing Lights”—adds significant collector appeal, particularly as packaging from this era was often discarded.
Pieces like this sit at the intersection of TV memorabilia, space-age design, and vintage toy collecting, making them increasingly desirable among collectors of 1960s pop culture and retro sci-fi.
