Description

Height: 18.5cm

Width: 10cm

A striking vintage West German pottery vase produced by Scheurich Keramik, bearing the impressed model number 523-18 to the base.

This classic mid-century design features the highly sought-after Fat Lava aesthetic, with a richly textured volcanic band encircling the body between deep blue-grey and olive-toned glazed sections.

The dramatic glaze effects create a wonderful contrast of glossy and cratered surfaces, characteristic of the experimental ceramic finishes that made West German pottery so influential during the 1960s and 1970s.

The vase has an elegant tapered form with ribbed lower section and gently flared neck, giving it strong sculptural presence whether displayed alone or as part of a larger collection of European studio ceramics.

Scheurich became one of Germany’s most important pottery manufacturers during the post-war period, producing bold modernist designs that remain highly collectable today.

Fat Lava examples such as this continue to be prized for their distinctive glazes, architectural forms and unmistakable retro appeal.
