A rare and highly unusual early 20th century Japanese daylight firework shell, dating to circa 1910.

Constructed from layered and lacquered paper, the spherical form retains its original hand-finished surface, complete with a printed label depicting a bear motif—likely indicating the figure or form produced upon ignition.

Daylight fireworks of this type were designed to release shaped figures or characters into the sky, rather than traditional night-time bursts of colour.

Manufactured in Japan and distributed in the West by companies such as Brock Fireworks, these novelty shells would deploy lightweight paper forms that expanded mid-air, creating striking visual displays in daylight conditions.

Due to their inherently ephemeral nature, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce, particularly in unused condition.

The craftsmanship and fragile construction mean very few have endured, making this a rare survivor of early 20th century pyrotechnic history.

A fascinating piece that sits at the intersection of industrial design, entertainment history, and early global trade, offering both visual impact and historical significance.
