Description
blade is: 57cm
An original French Model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet, designed for use with the Chassepot rifle, one of France’s most important service rifles of the mid-19th century.
This example displays the classic yataghan-style curved blade, a defining feature of the Chassepot bayonet, combining both cutting and thrusting capability.
The steel blade is paired with a robust iron crossguard featuring a pronounced forward-curving quillon.
The grip is constructed from ribbed brass, designed for durability and secure handling, with a functioning locking mechanism for rifle attachment. It is accompanied by its original steel scabbard.
Introduced in 1866, this pattern saw extensive use during the Franco-Prussian War, making it a historically significant piece of European militaria.
The distinctive form and solid construction have made the Chassepot bayonet a staple within serious edged weapon collections.
Care instructions:
Apply a light coat of conservation oil to the blade to inhibit further oxidation. Store in a dry environment and avoid prolonged storage within the scabbard to prevent moisture retention.
