Description
Width: 43.5cm
An original 19th century British socket plug bayonet, retaining its steel blade and distinctive socket mounting.
This example features the classic triangular-section blade associated with military bayonets of the early to mid-19th century.
The socket fitting was designed to slide over and lock onto the muzzle of a musket, transforming the firearm into a close-combat weapon when required.
Plug and socket bayonets played an important role throughout the development of British military arms, seeing service during a period of rapid change in infantry equipment and tactics.
The simple yet highly effective design allowed soldiers to move seamlessly between ranged and hand-to-hand combat.
The bayonet displays the robust forged construction typical of military production, with visible age and service wear adding to its authentic historical character.
Surviving examples remain highly sought after by collectors of militaria, antique weapons, Victorian military equipment and British regimental history.
