A rare and highly decorative early 19th century wooden constable’s truncheon, prominently hand painted with the date 1830 and retaining traces of its original polychrome decoration and gilt detailing.

Produced during a period when parish constables and watchmen carried truncheons as both symbols of authority and practical tools of office, this example displays an attractive aged blue-green ground with hand-painted gilt numerals and decorative motifs.

The turned grip provides a comfortable hold, whilst the elongated body would have been instantly recognisable as an emblem of law and civic authority.

Truncheons from this period pre-date the establishment of many modern police forces and are increasingly sought after by collectors of policing memorabilia, social history artefacts, and early law enforcement antiques.

The extensive wear and patination contribute to its historical character and authenticity, with remnants of the original paintwork surviving throughout.
