Description

A wonderful late Victorian edition of Mrs Beeton’s Shilling Cookery Book, also titled The Englishwoman’s Cookery Book, by Mrs Isabella Beeton and published by Ward, Lock and Tyler of London.

The title page identifies this example as the Two Hundred and Sixty-Fifth Thousand, an edition known from the late 19th century.

Containing more than 500 recipes and upwards of 300 illustrations, the book covers an extraordinary range of Victorian cookery including kitchen economy, pastry, puddings, soups, gravies, fish, joints, poultry, game, vegetables, desserts, sauces, preserving and pickling.

Particularly charming are the numerous period illustrations of Victorian kitchen equipment, cookware and food preparation methods, alongside advertisements for contemporary household products.

The original brown cloth cover is beautifully printed in black with its decorative period typography and extensive description of the book’s contents.

A fantastic piece of Victorian culinary and social history, ideal for collectors of early cookery books, Mrs Beeton memorabilia and antique kitchenalia.
