An unusual and highly decorative 19th century French First Communion memorial plaque, dated 31 May 1874.
The pointed oval plaque appears to be formed from polished black marble or stone and is mounted with an elaborate relief depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, surrounded by lilies and foliage with a skull at the foot of the cross.
A further large applied foliate element sits beneath.
The gilt inscription reads “A Ma Petite Fille” above, with “Souvenir de 1ère Communion – 31 Mai 1874” below, translating approximately as “To My Little Girl – Souvenir of First Communion – 31 May 1874.”
A particularly interesting piece of French Catholic devotional history, combining religious symbolism with a precisely dated personal dedication.
The applied metalwork has developed considerable age-related patination and verdigris, while the plaque itself displays surface marks and wear consistent with its age. Please study the photographs carefully for condition.
